Atlassian introduces AI agents in Jira to collaborate directly with human teams

In a move reflecting the growing adoption of artificial intelligence in workplace tools, enterprise software company Atlassian has announced that AI agents will now operate alongside human employees within its Jira platform. The update enables organisations to integrate AI directly into daily workflows instead of relying on separate tools.

According to the company, users can now deploy AI agents, including Atlassian’s Rovo and third-party AI models, within Jira. Teams will be able to view, assign, and manage tasks for both humans and AI agents on the same dashboard. The announcement comes as AI agents gain rapid traction across industries, with advanced systems increasingly reshaping workplace productivity.

How AI agents will function in Jira

Atlassian stated that users can assign tasks to AI agents just as they would to team members. Employees can collaborate with agents through comments, track progress, and even designate them as accountable contributors within projects.

The company said this approach keeps workflows unified on a single platform, eliminating the need for external integrations to manage AI-driven work. Currently available in open beta, the feature allows teams to involve AI agents during active projects, enabling real-time collaboration and workflow adjustments.

The integration also ensures AI agents follow existing project rules, including permissions, approval processes, audit trails, and configuration settings. Earlier AI integrations in project management platforms were often limited and disconnected from core workflows.

Tracking AI and human productivity together

The update allows organisations to monitor and compare work completed by both AI agents and human employees within the same environment. As businesses continue investing heavily in AI-led transformation, this capability could help measure real productivity gains delivered by AI adoption.

Atlassian also announced new investments in the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard that allows AI systems to access organisational tools, data, and workflows more effectively. Through MCP, Rovo agents can connect with third-party applications such as Amplitude and Figma, enabling access to live context and expanding task capabilities.
