Quietly signalling a shift toward intelligence at the edge, an embedded solutions firm has unveiled a major new AI initiative aimed at everyday electronic devices.
embedUR systems, a US–Chennai-based company that develops software for chips used in electronic and IoT devices, has launched a new collection of small AI models called ModelNova. The launch marks the company’s entry into scalable, on-device artificial intelligence.
ModelNova includes over 150 compact AI models that can be embedded directly onto chips used in devices such as remotes, cameras, and sensors. These models are designed for on-device use cases including face scanning, wireless technologies, and anomaly detection, among others.
Speaking to mediapersons at the launch, Rajesh Subramaniam, Founder and CEO of embedUR systems, said the company will invest ₹100 crore to build the infrastructure and teams required for ModelNova. This investment will support the creation of an edge intelligence centre in Chennai, which will employ 100 engineers. The team will focus on developing and deploying AI models for industrial, security, logistics, and healthcare sectors.
The ModelNova investment is part of a larger ₹500 crore commitment announced by the company in 2024, planned over a period of 5 years. Subramaniam said embedUR has already invested ₹300 crore in line with its initial targets. During the same period, the company expanded its workforce from 250 employees to around 400.
“We anticipate that in about 5 years time there will be a complete shift in hardware where every edge device will carry intelligence and the processing will happen directly on the device, not in the cloud,” he said.
Alongside ModelNova, embedUR systems also launched Fusion Studio, a platform that allows software developers to create, customise, and deploy AI models directly onto hardware devices. The platform is intended to simplify the adoption of on-device AI across different industries.
On revenue expectations, Subramaniam said the edge intelligence business driven by ModelNova could match embedUR’s traditional software embedding business by 2027. The company’s core business, which has been running for over 20 years, has generated an annual recurring revenue of about $50–$100 million over the past few years.
