In a significant push to strengthen AI-led scientific research, Google DeepMind has partnered with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), India’s apex research body, to introduce advanced AI science models for students and researchers across the country. The collaboration aims to accelerate scientific discovery by providing access to cutting-edge AI tools designed specifically for research and innovation.
As part of the partnership, Google DeepMind will roll out its science-focused AI models for academic training, hackathons and community innovation challenges. The lab will make large language models (LLMs) such as AlphaGenome, AI Co-scientist, and Earth AI available to the Indian research ecosystem. These tools are expected to support hands-on experimentation and real-world scientific problem-solving within universities and research institutions.
AlphaGenome is designed to help researchers analyse and interpret the human genome landscape, enabling deeper understanding in genetics and biomedical science. AI Co-scientist functions as a multi-agent AI system that acts as a virtual scientific collaborator, assisting researchers in generating ideas, refining hypotheses and structuring experiments. Earth AI is a collection of AI models focused on environmental monitoring and disaster response, helping scientists track climate patterns, assess risks and support sustainability initiatives. By integrating these tools into training programmes and contests, the initiative aims to build AI capability at scale within India’s scientific community.
This collaboration falls under DeepMind’s National Partnerships for AI programme, which focuses on working with governments and national institutions to deploy frontier AI models aligned with local priorities. After launching similar engagements in the US and the UK, the initiative has now expanded to India. The move reflects growing global recognition of India’s research ecosystem and its expanding role in AI-driven innovation.
