Indian AI company Sarvam AI has partnered with Finland-based HMD Global, the licensed manufacturer of Nokia phones, to introduce an AI-powered chatbot on HMD and Nokia feature phones. The move aims to enable users to access AI tools without needing a smartphone or laptop. India’s push to make artificial intelligence more accessible is expanding beyond smartphones, as a new collaboration aims to introduce AI capabilities directly into feature phones. The announcement was made during the ongoing AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, an event launched by the government on February 16 that brings together global industry leaders, companies, universities, and technology experts.
According to the company, users will be able to hold real-time conversations with the chatbot. The conversational assistant will support multiple local languages, allowing people to ask questions and receive responses in their preferred language, although specific languages have not yet been disclosed.
The partnership announcement was shared by HMD Global through a post on X and highlighted during a summit presentation. Sarvam’s Head of Edge AI said the company is leveraging edge AI, or on-device AI, to bring intelligence to “every phone, laptop, car, and even on new generation of devices”, signalling broader plans beyond mobile handsets.
Sarvam AI is also working to expand its technology across platforms, including vehicle infotainment systems and wearable devices. The company recently entered the hardware space with plans to develop “AI-first” devices. At the summit, it showcased its first AI smart glasses, called Sarvam Kaze, which are expected to launch in India in May, though the exact date has not been announced.
The upcoming smart glasses will allow users to interact with an AI assistant and ask questions about objects they see in real time, further extending AI access into everyday experiences.
