At a time when India is accelerating its push toward advanced digital capabilities, a major step has been announced to strengthen the country’s artificial intelligence backbone.
Engineering major Larsen & Toubro has entered into a strategic partnership with NVIDIA under the IndiaAI Mission to develop a sovereign, gigawatt-scale AI factory infrastructure. The initiative is aimed at supporting India’s long-term industrial and digital transformation while positioning the country as a global AI leader.
The collaboration targets Indian enterprises, policymakers, industry leaders, global offtakers, and analysts who are seeking production-grade AI capacity. It brings together L&T’s strengths in engineering, infrastructure development, and large-scale execution with NVIDIA’s advanced AI infrastructure, including GPUs, CPUs, and networking technologies.
As part of the project, the joint venture will deploy AI-ready data center infrastructure, advanced computing platforms, and ecosystem enablement tools. These systems are designed to support large-scale AI workloads across priority sectors. The infrastructure will enable the building, training, and deployment of critical data, models, and workloads within India, while ensuring interoperability with global AI ecosystems.
The partnership also outlines plans to establish a gigawatt-scale AI data center factory capable of handling high-density, next-generation workloads. This approach is expected to allow efficient and sustainable expansion of AI capacity across the country.
Under the expansion plan, NVIDIA GPU cluster deployment at L&T’s Chennai data center will be scaled up to 30MW on a 300-acre gigawatt-scalable campus. In parallel, deployment will also extend to a new 40MW data center that is currently under execution in Mumbai.
The initiative reflects a broader effort to create sovereign AI infrastructure in India, aligned with national priorities and global standards, while supporting the growing demand for advanced computing and AI-driven innovation.
