Government asks global tech platforms to align with constitutional norms amid stricter content rules

As regulatory attention on online platforms increases, the Indian government has reiterated that global technology companies must operate within the country’s legal and cultural framework. The statement comes shortly after new content moderation rules were introduced, tightening compliance expectations for digital platforms.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Tuesday that major technology platforms such as Google’s YouTube, Meta, X, and Netflix must function in accordance with India’s constitutional principles. His remarks were made on the sidelines of an artificial intelligence summit held in Delhi, attended by global AI leaders and policymakers.

“It’s very important for the multinationals to understand the cultural context of the country in which they are operating,” the minister said during a briefing at the India AI Impact Summit.

Last week, the government announced stricter rules requiring social media companies to remove unlawful content within 3 hours of receiving notice. This significantly reduces the earlier 36-hour timeline and may create new compliance challenges for major digital platforms.

The minister also stressed the need for stronger regulation around deepfakes, stating that discussions with industry stakeholders have already begun to address the issue.

Globally, governments are increasing pressure on social media companies to take faster action against harmful and illegal content. Authorities across regions, including Brussels and Brasilia, are pushing for stricter accountability and quicker takedowns.

In a related development, Spain has ordered prosecutors to investigate platforms including TikTok, X, and Meta over allegations linked to the spread of AI-generated child sexual abuse material, highlighting rising regulatory scrutiny worldwide.

The developments reflect a broader global shift toward tighter oversight of digital platforms as governments seek stronger safeguards against misuse of artificial intelligence and online content.
