A new development suggests that multitasking with artificial intelligence on smartphones could soon become more accessible. Reports indicate that Google is gradually expanding a key Gemini feature that was previously limited to larger devices such as foldables and tablets.
According to a technology publication, Google is reportedly extending split-screen compatibility for the Gemini app to non-foldable smartphones. Until now, Gemini could run side-by-side mainly on devices with larger displays. The update may allow users to use the AI assistant alongside another app on standard handsets.
The report states that while non-foldable phone users could earlier open Gemini in split-screen mode, the functionality was restricted and did not allow true side-by-side usage. This is said to be changing with the Google app version 17.5.42.ve.arm64. Testing conducted on a Pixel 9 reportedly showed Gemini running smoothly in split view with another application.
A new option titled “Share screen and app content” is also said to appear when Gemini enters split-screen mode. When activated, the feature allows the AI assistant to view what is open in the second app and respond to user queries based on that content. The experience is reportedly smoother than the earlier overlay method, which blocked parts of the screen while Gemini responded.
The feature is said to behave differently depending on the second app being used. If a browser or similar application is open, Gemini reportedly captures the URL and answers questions using that information. For non-web apps, the assistant takes a screenshot and analyses visual data to generate responses. During this process, Gemini reportedly blacks out its own interface to avoid confusion.
The report also notes that the feature was not visible on several tested devices, including the recently launched iQOO 15. This suggests the rollout may be gradual. Until an official announcement is made, it remains unclear whether the capability will expand beyond Pixel devices.
