A new report suggests that Apple is preparing to expand its laptop lineup by entering the non-premium segment with a more affordable MacBook model. The device is expected to be unveiled at a company event planned for March, although it remains unclear whether the launch will focus solely on the new laptop or include additional hardware announcements.
According to the report, the upcoming MacBook could be priced below $1,000 (around Rs. 90,700), potentially making it the most affordable MacBook available. To reduce costs, the laptop is said to use the A18 Pro chipset, the same processor powering the iPhone 16 Pro models. The device may feature a slightly smaller display measuring under 13 inches, compared with existing Air and Pro variants.
The company is also reportedly experimenting with a fresh design approach. Instead of its traditional muted finishes, Apple is said to be testing bright and “playful colours,” including light yellow, light green, blue, pink, classic silver, and dark gray. However, not all colour options may be offered at launch.
Codenamed J700, the MacBook is expected to maintain premium build standards despite its lower price. Reports indicate it will feature an aluminium chassis created using a new manufacturing process designed to lower production costs while improving production speed.
Earlier reports suggest the device may include 8GB RAM and long battery life. While it is expected to miss out on a Thunderbolt port, it could offer USB Type-C ports for data transfer. Some limitations may apply when connecting external displays.
If launched as reported, the new MacBook could mark a strategic move by Apple to reach a broader audience while maintaining its design and performance identity.
