Blackstone raises Anthropic stake to $1 billion in latest AI funding push

In a fresh sign of strong investor appetite for generative AI, Blackstone is expanding its investment in US-based startup Anthropic. According to a source familiar with the matter who spoke to an international news agency, the investment firm will add $200 million to Anthropic’s ongoing funding round, taking its total stake to around $1 billion.

The latest infusion values the AI startup at approximately $350 billion. Anthropic is backed by major technology companies including Amazon and Alphabet, and continues to attract significant interest as competition in advanced AI models intensifies.

Anthropic is known for developing the Claude AI models. The company recently launched its new flagship system, Opus 4.6, aimed at strengthening its position in enterprise and consumer AI solutions. According to the company, the new model offers improved reasoning, coding, and complex text-generation capabilities compared to earlier versions.

Opus 4.6 is also designed to handle tasks over extended periods with better reliability. The company stated that it delivers notable performance gains in areas such as software development and financial analysis.

The release of the upgraded model came just days before a decline in traditional software stocks. Recent advances in artificial intelligence have renewed concerns that AI could disrupt established business models across the technology sector.

Meanwhile, Anthropic is facing legal challenges in India. A local software company, Anthropic Software, has alleged prior use of the name “Anthropic.” The Indian firm, established in 2017, filed a complaint in a Karnataka commercial court in January this year. It claims that the US-based AI company’s expansion into India has created confusion among customers.

Anthropic Software is seeking formal recognition of its prior usage, relief to prevent further confusion, and ₹10 million in damages.

The latest investment and legal developments highlight both the rapid growth and increasing scrutiny surrounding leading AI companies as the sector continues to expand globally.
