In a move aimed at strengthening user safety, Google on Wednesday announced updates to its Search reporting tools to make it easier for individuals to request the removal of non-consensual explicit images from search results. The Mountain View-based company said the redesigned system simplifies the reporting process, provides clearer guidance, and improves transparency around removal requests. Users will also be directed to support resources, including organisations offering emotional and legal assistance.
The updated removal process is specifically designed to support victims of non-consensual explicit imagery. It builds on Google’s existing protections, including easier content removal options and improved ranking systems. The company confirmed in a blog post that the new experience will roll out over the coming days.
Google has refreshed its reporting form to make it easier to flag explicit images appearing in Search results. The form now includes clearer categories, such as options to report non-consensual explicit content and deepfake imagery. According to the company, this streamlined approach reduces confusion and helps users submit accurate removal requests faster.
The tech giant has also improved submission tracking. After filing a report, users can monitor the progress of their request and receive updates. This allows greater visibility into whether a case is under review or has been resolved.
How to request removal of explicit images from Google Search:
-
Open Google Search and navigate to the image in question
-
Click on the 3-dot menu next to the result
-
Select the option related to reporting a legal or policy issue
-
Choose the category that best describes the issue, such as non-consensual explicit content
-
Fill out the removal request form with required details, including URLs and supporting information
-
Submit the form and track the status through Google’s reporting dashboard
Google clarified that removing an image from Search results does not delete it from the original website. Users may need to contact the site owner separately to remove the content from the internet entirely.
In addition, Google is expanding its “Results about you” tool. This will allow users to find and request removal of search results containing sensitive personal information such as driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, or Social Security numbers. The expanded feature will also roll out in the coming days.
