Boeing to consolidate 787 engineering in South Carolina; Washington jobs at risk

A shift in production strategy is set to reshape Boeing’s engineering footprint in the US as the aircraft maker accelerates output of a key commercial jet.

Boeing informed employees last week that it plans to consolidate 787 engineering work in South Carolina, according to the union representing its engineers. The move could see about 300 engineering roles relocated from Washington state to a non-union location as production of the twin-aisle aircraft ramps up.

Engineers in Washington are represented by the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace. The union said the proposed shift would move roles away from a unionised workforce. Boeing’s 2 contracts covering about 16,000 SPEEA members in Washington are due to expire in October.

Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the proposed consolidation.

Separately, the company’s defence unit is laying off around 300 non-union supply chain employees, a person familiar with the matter told a news agency on Wednesday. The cuts come as Boeing continues to adjust its workforce amid changing business needs.

The person said some of the affected employees may be considered for open positions elsewhere within the company. The source was not authorised to speak publicly about personnel matters.

In an emailed statement, a Boeing spokesperson said, “Boeing regularly evaluates and adjusts its workforce to stay aligned to our commitments to our customers and communities.”

The developments underscore ongoing changes across Boeing’s commercial and defence operations as it balances production goals, cost controls, and labour considerations. The potential relocation of engineering roles also highlights broader tensions around union representation as the company reshapes its manufacturing and engineering base.
