Thane is set to take a major step toward cleaner mobility as the city administration has approved the installation of 19 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across key locations.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has identified and finalised 19 sites for the project after a detailed survey carried out by its Electric Department and City Development Department. The exercise was conducted under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao. Following this assessment, tenders have been issued to roll out the charging infrastructure across the city.
The project will be implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Under this arrangement, private contractors selected through the tender process will bear the full responsibility for construction, operation, maintenance, power supply, permissions, and security of the charging stations. This ensures that the municipal corporation will not incur any financial burden.
In return for using public land, the contractors will share revenue with TMC. The corporation will earn a minimum of INR 1 per unit of electricity consumed at these charging stations. The land required for the installations will be provided by the municipal corporation for a period of 10 years.
As per the project conditions, contractors must keep the charging stations operational on a continuous basis. A minimum mandatory operation period of 3 years has been specified. Electricity tariffs charged to users will be fixed in line with guidelines issued by the Central Government’s Ministry of Energy.
To maintain a uniform and regulated public utility environment, commercial advertising will not be allowed at the charging station sites. The initiative is aimed at strengthening EV infrastructure in Thane while supporting eco-friendly transport options for residents.
With this move, the city administration is working toward improving EV accessibility without placing additional strain on civic finances, while also ensuring long-term operational accountability through private participation.
