Behind a steady push toward automation and smarter discovery, Pinterest has announced plans to reduce its global workforce by under 15% as part of a large-scale restructuring effort. The move reflects the company’s growing focus on artificial intelligence and long-term platform efficiency.
The layoffs are expected to affect around 700–800 employees worldwide. Pinterest said the decision is aimed at realigning its cost structure, product roadmap, and hiring priorities to better support an AI-driven future.
The workforce reduction was disclosed in a regulatory filing and confirmed by company statements. Pinterest said the cuts are part of a broader restructuring plan that will redirect resources toward AI development while streamlining teams that no longer fit its long-term strategy. The company also plans to consolidate operations and reduce office space. As a result, Pinterest expects pre-tax restructuring charges ranging between $35 million and $45 million.
The timing of the move comes as Pinterest faces increasing competition from platforms such as TikTok, Meta, and other AI-native discovery tools. While the company’s advertising growth has shown signs of stabilising, pressure remains. Pinterest’s management believes deeper use of AI will improve content personalisation, boost shopping conversion rates, and strengthen long-term revenue efficiency. The company stressed that the layoffs are focused on reallocating capital for future growth, not short-term survival.
Over the past year, Pinterest has invested heavily in machine learning models that support search relevance, visual discovery, and shopping recommendations. These systems rely less on traditional roles and more on specialised AI expertise. As part of this transition, Pinterest is reducing teams linked to older workflows while increasing investment in automation-driven product development.
The job cuts will be global, affecting employees in the United States, Europe, and parts of Asia, as Pinterest reshapes its organisation around AI-first capabilities.
