CBI arrests HPCL officer after ₹1 lakh bribe trap in Chandrapur

In a swift anti-corruption operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a sales officer of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited after catching him red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹1 lakh in Chandrapur on January 17.

The accused, Pratik Tagale, was taken into custody by the CBI’s anti-corruption branch following a trap laid after a formal complaint. A case has been registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

According to the CBI, the complainant’s wife, who is the proprietor of an HPCL retail outlet, submitted a written complaint on January 12. She alleged that Tagale demanded a bribe of ₹2 lakh to facilitate the handover of the retail outlet, even though all dues had been cleared and disputes settled.

After verifying the allegations on January 13, investigators found that the officer continued to insist on full payment. When the complainant said she could not arrange the entire amount, Tagale allegedly agreed to accept ₹1 lakh as part payment on January 17.

Acting on this, the CBI laid a trap and caught the officer while he was accepting the bribe, leading to his arrest at the spot.

The CBI’s Nagpur unit has urged citizens to come forward and report any demands for bribes by employees of central government departments or public sector undertakings. Complaints can be made by contacting 9423683211 or 07122510382.
