Google unveils open AI models for medical imaging and clinical speech analysis

Google has introduced two new healthcare focused artificial intelligence models named MedGemma 1.5 and MedASR. The release marks the next phase of the company push into healthcare technology. Unlike some rivals that offer healthcare AI as paid enterprise products, Google has chosen to make these models openly available to the developer and research community.

In a blog post, Google Research explained that MedGemma 1.5 is the latest version of its medical vision language model. The model is built to analyse medical images together with text. It can interpret scans, respond to questions related to visual medical data, and support research tasks that involve both images and language.

The company said MedGemma 1.5 offers stronger multimodal reasoning and improved handling of complex medical images compared to earlier versions. It also provides greater flexibility for fine tuning on specialised medical datasets. The model can work with several types of medical images, including radiology scans and other clinical visuals.

Google clarified that MedGemma 1.5 is meant for research and development use. It is not designed to offer diagnoses or treatment advice. Instead, it is positioned as a support tool for tasks such as image based question answering, report creation, and structured data extraction.

Along with MedGemma 1.5, Google also launched MedASR. This is a medical automatic speech recognition model developed for healthcare environments. MedASR is designed to convert spoken clinical conversations into text while handling medical terms, different accents, and real world clinical audio conditions.

According to Google, MedASR aims to reduce errors that are common when general speech recognition tools are used in healthcare settings. It can be used for transcribing doctor and patient conversations, clinical notes, and dictated medical reports. The model can also be fine tuned to match specific clinical workflows or documentation needs.

Google stated that all versions of MedGemma and the MedASR model are available through its listings on developer platforms and its cloud AI services. Tutorials are also available through the company developer repository. Both models are released under a permissive licence that allows use in both research and commercial projects.
