Jalandhar is set to get a sports technology extension centre aimed at supporting local MSMEs, especially those in sports goods and related manufacturing. The Union minister for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) has approved the proposal, Punjab industries minister Sanjeev Arora announced on Thursday.
The new centre will provide services such as advanced product and process development, technology transfer, testing support, skill development, and handholding assistance to MSMEs. It is designed to help smaller units upgrade technology and improve competitiveness in the sports sector.
On Dec 18, the ministry officially communicated through principal director Aditya Prakash Sharma that the next steps include signing an MoU and executing a lease deed for the centre at the Government Institute of Leather and Footwear Technology (GILFT) in Jalandhar. The MoU is scheduled to be signed on Jan 5, 2026, in the city.
The facility will operate under the Hub and Spoke Model, with mentorship provided by PPDC, Meerut. A total built-up area of 11,166 square feet across the ground, first, and second floors of the GILFT building has been allocated for the centre’s establishment.
This initiative aims to strengthen the technology base of sports manufacturing MSMEs and provide them with access to modern facilities and expert guidance, helping them compete in both domestic and international markets.
