WhatsApp begins public testing of channel invitation feature on Android

WhatsApp is moving closer to simplifying channel growth with the testing of a new channel invitation feature for Android users.

The feature was earlier identified as under development in a beta update, allowing channel admins to invite contacts directly from their address book to follow a channel. Invitations are sent through a clear in app flow, making the process quick and easy. Recipients receive a chat message with a button that opens the channel, enabling them to follow it instantly.

The functionality is now being tested more broadly, as some beta users have gained access to the new channel invitation tools. Reports indicate that admins can see a new option designed to help them invite contacts directly to their channels.

Following the release of the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.1.8 on the Google Play Store, the platform has started rolling out this feature to selected testers. The tool appears within the channel information panel and allows admins to choose contacts saved on their device.

Once contacts are selected, WhatsApp automatically creates a message that lands in the recipient’s chat. The message includes a button that opens the channel, allowing users to follow it with minimal effort.

This update offers a more direct way for channels to grow. Earlier, admins depended on shared links, the in app directory, or passive discovery, which often limited reach for smaller channels. Direct invitations add a personal layer to channel promotion and can help surface content that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Recipients also benefit from knowing who recommended the channel, which can make the invitation feel more trustworthy. For admins, this approach helps reach contacts who may already be interested in their work or community activities, encouraging stronger engagement from the start.

The feature is currently available to a limited group of Android testers. This phased testing allows WhatsApp to monitor real usage, refine the interface, and ensure smooth message delivery before expanding access in future updates.
