Apple plans lighter AirPods Max with new chip and advanced audio features

Apple’s plans to refresh its AirPods Max, with the next version expected to arrive in the coming years with notable design and technology upgrades.

According to a report, Apple is working on a new AirPods Max model that will feature a lighter build and introduce several features currently available on AirPods Pro. These include Adaptive Audio, Personalised Volume, and Conversation Awareness, which are expected to be powered by a newer H2 chip. Apple is also likely to add new colour options and redesign the carrying case.

What the next AirPods Max may bring

Earlier this year, Apple supply chain analyst Ming Chi Kuo said that the updated AirPods Max are expected to enter mass production in 2027. While detailed specifications were not shared, he noted that the new model will be lighter than the current version. As per Apple’s official data, the existing AirPods Max weigh 386.2 g.

A key upgrade is expected in the processor. The current AirPods Max still use Apple’s H1 chip, which was introduced in 2019. The upcoming model is likely to move to the newer H2 chip or a more advanced version. This change would align the AirPods Max with recent AirPods Pro models and unlock multiple audio and software enhancements.

With the H2 chip, users can expect improved sound quality, stronger Active Noise Cancellation, and better battery efficiency. The chip would also support Adaptive Audio, which adjusts noise control based on the surrounding environment, and Personalised Volume, which adapts sound levels based on listening habits. Conversation Awareness is also expected to be included, lowering audio playback and enhancing voices when the user begins speaking.

The newer chip could also enable hands free Siri access using the shorter “Siri” wake phrase instead of “Hey Siri,” a feature already available on newer AirPods models.

Beyond internal changes, Apple is expected to make smaller updates to the physical design. These may include new colour options for the ear cushions and headband, along with a redesigned carrying case. The report also suggests that Apple could add an Ultra Wideband chip to the case, enabling Precision Finding support through the Find My app.
