Tensions over Russia’s ban on the popular U.S. gaming platform Roblox (RBLX.N) came to the surface on Sunday as residents of Tomsk staged a rare public protest. Several dozen people gathered in the city to voice their opposition, highlighting growing frustration over digital restrictions imposed by the government.
Russia’s communications watchdog, Roskomnadzor, announced on December 3, that Roblox was blocked, citing concerns that the platform is “rife with inappropriate content that can negatively impact the spiritual and moral development of children.” The ban adds to Moscow’s broader censorship, which includes restrictions on Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and YouTube, while promoting a state-controlled narrative across Russian media.
In Tomsk, located 2,900 km., east of Moscow, protesters braved the snow to display hand-drawn placards with messages such as “Hands off Roblox” and “Roblox is the victim of the digital Iron Curtain.” Photographs shared by organisers showed around 25 people standing in a circle holding signs that also read, “Bans and blocks are all you are able to do.” The demonstrations have sparked debate about censorship, child safety online and the effectiveness of bans in a digital world where VPNs allow users to bypass restrictions.
Some parents and teachers in Russia expressed concern that Roblox could expose children to sexual content or allow communication with adults. Roblox, headquartered in San Mateo, California, has faced bans in countries like Iraq and Turkey over similar safety concerns. When the Russian ban was introduced, the company stated it has “a deep commitment to safety” and offers “rigorous built-in protections to help keep users safe.” Russian officials argue that such censorship is necessary to defend against an “information war” from Western powers and protect “traditional” Russian values.
