The Cybercrime police in Hyderabad, along with the Task Force East unit, have arrested an eight member gang involved in creating and supplying mule bank accounts to cyber fraudsters in several States. This operation is a major step in tackling cyber enabled financial crime.
The gang helped criminals carry out large scale online cheating schemes that led to fraudulent transactions of more than Rs 24 crore.
The main accused, Poojari Jagadish also known as Jaggu, is an auto driver from Boduppal. He was drawn into the illegal network in 2023 by a passenger named Kannaiah from Rajasthan, who is now on the run. Jagadish was tempted by quick earnings and began opening bank accounts. He later expanded the activity by involving friends, relatives, and other workers.
Police officials said the gang opened 127 mule accounts across different banks. These included Federal Bank, Karnataka Bank, Bank of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu Mercantile Bank, Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank and Karur Vysya Bank.
The account kits, which included passbooks, ATM cards and cheque books, were regularly sent by courier to cyber criminals named Kannaiah, Ramesh and Poonam in Rajasthan.
A senior police official said, “Jagadish, receiving up to Rs 10,000 per account, used Aadhaar, PAN, new SIM cards and enlisted people for commissions ranging from Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000.”
Jagadish later connected with cyber criminals Poonam and Ramesh and built a larger network that included auto drivers, delivery executives and hardware technicians.
Police stated that the fraud accounts were linked to cases in Vanasthalipuram, Rajendranagar, Karnataka and Rajasthan.
During the arrests, officials seized bank passbooks, ATM cards, cheque books, SIM cards, gadgets, mobile phones and other items.
Authorities urged the public not to open bank accounts for others or share personal banking details. They warned that such actions support cyber fraud networks and can lead to serious legal consequences.
