Elon Musk said on Sunday that Tesla has started the tape out process for its new AI5 chipset. This chip will succeed the AI4 processor that is currently used in the latest Tesla cars. He also confirmed that the company has begun work on the next generation AI6 chipset. Musk added that the Texas based firm plans to expand its chip development to compete with major AI chipmakers worldwide.
In a post on X, Musk said that Tesla is close to completing the AI5 tape out. This step marks the final stage of chip design before it is sent to a foundry for fabrication. He also shared that the company has already started designing the AI6 chip.
Musk explained that many people are still unaware that Tesla has had its own AI chip division and engineering team for years. He said the team has designed and deployed millions of AI chips for its electric vehicles and data centres. These chips also power the company’s full self driving system.
Musk also spoke about Tesla’s long term vision. He said, “Our goal is to bring a new AI chip design to volume production every 12 months. We expect to build chips at higher volumes ultimately than all other AI chips combined.” He added that these processors are also used in the company’s Optimus humanoid robots and help deliver advanced medical care.
A common report stated that Samsung has secured a sixteen point five billion dollar deal with Tesla to produce AI chipsets. Musk reportedly said that a new Samsung foundry in Texas will be fully dedicated to fabricating the AI6 processor.
Tesla is also hiring engineers with chip design experience. Musk encouraged interested individuals to apply. “We are particularly interested in applying cutting edge AI to chip design,” he added.
