Qualcomm has said that Android smartphones powered by its Snapdragon processors will soon support cross platform file sharing with Apple devices. This follows the recent announcement by Google that Android’s Quick Share now works with Apple’s AirDrop system for wireless transfers with iPhones, iPads and Macs. At present, the feature is available only on the Google Pixel 10 series.
Google has not yet shared the list of Android models that will receive the feature next. However, replying to a post from the official Android account on a social media platform, Qualcomm said, “Can’t wait for people to use this once enabled on Snapdragon in the near future.”
This suggests that support for AirDrop through Quick Share will reach Snapdragon powered smartphones soon. The rollout is expected to begin with the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 devices, which include the OnePlus 15, Realme GT 8 Pro, the upcoming iQOO 15 and other similar models. It may later expand to phones using the previous generation Snapdragon 8 Elite platform and other Snapdragon 8 series devices. Google is also likely to add support for last year’s Pixel 9 series.
Quick Share is also available on Windows computers. It is not yet known if AirDrop support will extend to laptops in future.
Quick Share’s AirDrop integration works in both directions. Android and Apple users can send files to each other directly. When sharing from an iPhone or Mac to a Pixel 10 series phone, the Pixel appears in the AirDrop panel. When sharing from Android, Apple devices show up in the full screen Quick Share menu.
Some Android brands such as OnePlus and OPPO offered cross platform sharing earlier, but those methods required an app on the Apple device. Google says its system works natively. It added, “This feature does not use a workaround; the connection is direct and peer to peer, meaning your data is never routed through a server, shared content is never logged, and no extra data is shared.”
Users can share files both ways by updating Quick Share on Pixel 10 series phones and adjusting visibility settings on Apple devices. Transfers require choosing the file, selecting Quick Share or AirDrop and then accepting the request on the receiving device.
