WhatsApp is rolling out a new way for users to share brief updates, bringing a feature that closely mirrors Instagram Notes. The update allows people to post short text messages that others can view, offering a simple space to share what they are doing or what is on their mind.
The company says users can share updates that spark conversations or let others know why they may not be available to chat. Although many may see this as a new addition, WhatsApp explains that this About feature was actually the app’s earliest capability before it evolved into a platform focused on secure private messaging.
With this relaunch, the About status feature will become more visible across the app. It will now appear at the top of one on one chats and on user profiles. Anyone can tap on a person’s About message inside a chat and reply to it directly.
Similar to Instagram Notes, the About status will automatically disappear after a day. Users can adjust the timer if they prefer it to vanish sooner or remain for longer than twenty four hours. They can also choose who can view the update whether it is only their contacts or a wider audience.
While the initial version is simpler than Instagram Notes, which supports short looping videos and music integrations, WhatsApp suggests that more features may be added if user adoption grows.
The new About status feature is rolling out to mobile users starting this week.
