Foxconn and OpenAI team up to advance next generation AI hardware

A new collaboration between Foxconn and OpenAI is set to strengthen global AI infrastructure as both companies move to meet rising demand for advanced computing systems. Foxconn announced that it will work with OpenAI to co design and engineer data center racks, components and other artificial intelligence hardware.

Under the initial agreement, there are no financial commitments or purchase obligations. However, OpenAI will receive early access to evaluate the hardware systems and may choose to buy them later. For Foxconn, the partnership offers deeper insight into the technical needs of large AI companies and will help it build products suited for future large language models. The company recently forecast strong AI driven demand in 2026 supported by rising global investments in data centers.

The collaboration also expands OpenAI’s growing interest in hardware development. It follows the company’s work with Broadcom to create custom chips. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has shared that the company aims to invest one point four trillion dollars to build thirty gigawatts of compute capacity, saying it would be “enough to power roughly 25 million U.S. homes.” Altman said, “This partnership is a step toward ensuring the core technologies of the AI era are built here. We believe this work will strengthen U.S. leadership and help ensure the benefits of AI are widely shared.”

Foxconn will manufacture the data center components in its United States facilities. These will include power systems, cables and networking equipment. Producing them within the country will support domestic supply chains and help avoid possible tariffs under the current administration.

In a separate announcement, Foxconn revealed a joint venture with a robotics company under Alphabet. The partnership aims to bring general purpose robotics and automation technologies into Foxconn’s manufacturing operations. The areas covered include assembly, inspection, machine tending and logistics.
