Nayara Energy, backed by Russia, has appointed Teymur Abasguliyev as its new Chief Executive Officer. He will officially take charge in September with a focus on driving organisational transformation and ensuring sustainable growth.
Abasguliyev will succeed Alessandro Des Dorides, who had taken over the role in March this year but stepped down soon after the European Union imposed sanctions on the refiner as part of its measures against Russia over the war in Ukraine.
With nearly three decades of professional experience and more than 20 years of international leadership in the energy sector, Abasguliyev joins Nayara Energy from SOCAR Türkiye Enerji A.Ş., where he has served as Chief Financial Officer for Group Companies since 2013. In this role, he managed corporate governance, financing, mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, and large-scale organisational restructuring. A Fellow of the UK Association of Certified Public Accountants since 2002, he brings strong expertise in financial strategy and global business leadership.
He began his career in 1994 at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, building a strong grounding in international strategy. He then spent 17 years with PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he rose to senior manager and partner, leading major projects for clients across Central and Eastern Europe.
Widely recognised for his strategic vision and results-oriented leadership, Abasguliyev has extensive experience across refining, petrochemicals, gas distribution, trading, and infrastructure. He has played a key role in multibillion-dollar investments and transformative transactions, while consistently creating high-performing multicultural teams. He is also respected as a board member and mentor.
Abasguliyev holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in International Relations and Law from Baku State University.
