Telangana police caution public against fake donation requests amid border tensions

The state and national cybercrime police warned the public against falling for such techniques, fearing that cybercriminals might exploit the growing tensions along India’s border to solicit donations by posing as Army officers.

Officials warned the public not to reply to these phony calls for donations. Additionally, they instructed them to keep an eye out for any messages, links, or apk files titled “Operation Sindoor” that request that users click on them in order to obtain updates on the operation or to solicit donations. Instead, police advised the public to report these phony requests to the cybercrime hotline 1930 right away.

“Be cautious during these challenging times. Before trusting any information found on social media, please check its authenticity. Report fake accounts,” On X, the Union home ministry’s CyberDost, Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), account was uploaded. In a similar vein, Telangana’s cyber security agency sent out a notice, telling all Telangana police units to be vigilant for these assaults and take prompt action.

Officials stated that scammers can attack via calls, SMS, WhatsApp messages, links, and even other social media platforms, even though no incidents have been documented in the state thus far. “So far, there is no request from the govt or the armed forces seeking financial support. People are advised to follow only the official communication from the concerned authorities or verify the same with the nearest available authorities to prevent any financial losses,” said an official. Even if they do not lose any money, police asked everyone who receives similar offers to notify them.
