‘Software technology parks of India can kick-start AI revolution’

India has the opportunity to become a global leader in artificial intelligence application development, similar to how the country became a major provider of software services to the world. This view was shared by Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. He was speaking on Wednesday at a pre event for the India AI Impact Summit which will take place in February 2026. The meeting was held during the Bangalore Technology Summit.

Mr Singh said the Software Technology Parks of India have played a major role in supporting India’s software growth and should now be able to help start the next phase of progress in AI. He explained that countries across the United States, Europe and the Middle East are investing heavily in data centres powered by renewable energy. These centres will support high end AI compute that helps companies train AI models and build AI applications.

He asked whether India could move in the same direction. He noted that the Software Technology Parks of India have 65 centres across the country and asked Arvind Kumar, Director General of the organisation, if these centres could become the AI factories of the future. He also asked if India could position itself as the AI garage of the world.

Mr Singh highlighted that the biggest impact of artificial intelligence on people is linked to jobs, employment and the need to reskill and upskill the country’s tech workforce. He said developers and coders must be prepared so they are not negatively affected by the rise of AI.

He also spoke about the wider benefits of artificial intelligence. According to him, AI tools can predict floods and other extreme climate events which can support people and farmers. He added that AI can offer social and economic benefits. Farmers can receive agriculture based advice in their own language, including guidance on water use, fertilisers, pesticides and the best market to sell their produce.

He said that micro, small and medium enterprises can also gain from artificial intelligence. They can receive suggestions about the right product mix, production cost, sourcing of raw materials and the price at which they should sell their goods.
