SoftBank Group Corp. (TSE: 9984) has announced its decision to acquire Ampere® Computing, an independent leader in semiconductor design, for a total of $6.5 billion in cash. The acquisition will make Ampere a fully owned subsidiary of SoftBank, while retaining its name and brand. Carlyle (NASDAQ: CG) and Oracle Corp. (NYSE: ORCL), the company’s primary investors, will exit their investments as part of the deal.
As SoftBank continues to expand its investments in AI infrastructure, including initiatives like Cristal intelligence and Stargate, this acquisition is expected to enhance its strategic capabilities and accelerate its growth in these areas.
“The future of Artificial Super Intelligence requires breakthrough computing power,” said Masayoshi Son, Chairman and CEO of SoftBank Group Corp. “Ampere’s expertise in semiconductors and high-performance computing will help accelerate this vision, and deepens our commitment to AI innovation in the United States.”
Renee James, Founder and CEO of Ampere, expressed enthusiasm about the deal, adding, “With a shared vision for advancing AI, we are excited to join SoftBank Group and partner with its portfolio of leading technology companies. This is a fantastic outcome for our team, and we are excited to drive forward our AmpereOne® roadmap for high performance Arm processors and AI.”
Founded in 2018 in Silicon Valley, Ampere initially focused on cloud-native computing but has since expanded to provide sustainable AI computing solutions. The company now offers a range of products designed for various cloud workloads, from the edge to the cloud data center.
The acquisition, expected to close in the second half of 2025, is still subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. Ampere will continue to operate from its headquarters in Santa Clara, California.
