India marked a major milestone in border infrastructure development as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a record number of projects in a single event.
On Sunday, Singh dedicated 125 strategically important infrastructure projects of the Border Roads Organisation from Ladakh. This is the highest number of BRO projects ever inaugurated at one time. The Ministry of Defence said the projects are worth around five thousand crore rupees and are spread across Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, along with seven states including Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Mizoram.
The projects include twenty eight roads, ninety three bridges and four other key assets. This also marks the largest value of projects inaugurated in the history of the BRO.
The main ceremony was held at the Shyok Tunnel site on the Darbuk Shyok Daulat Beg Oldie Road. A key highlight was the nine hundred twenty metre long Shyok Tunnel, which will provide all weather connectivity in one of the most difficult regions in the world. Singh said the tunnel will improve mobility, security and rapid deployment during harsh winters marked by avalanches and heavy snowfall.
He also virtually inaugurated the Galwan War Memorial, built in honour of Indian soldiers who laid down their lives. Speaking at the event, Singh said the projects reflect the government’s commitment to border development under the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Referring to Operation Sindoor, he said strong connectivity helped the Armed Forces carry out the mission with precision and coordination. He praised the cooperation between the forces, civil administration and local residents, calling it the “unique identity” of the nation.
Singh also highlighted the BRO’s humanitarian work in Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Jammu and Kashmir. He noted the use of indigenous Class seventy modular bridges developed under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
He added that the BRO recorded a spending of sixteen thousand six hundred ninety crore rupees in the financial year 2024 25, with a higher outlay planned for 2025 26. In the last two years alone, three hundred fifty six BRO projects have been dedicated to the nation.
