At a time when artificial intelligence is becoming mainstream, India is preparing for the next leap in technology, with quantum computing emerging as a critical frontier, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said on Sunday.
Speaking in an interview with a news agency, Naidu said India is well placed to take a leadership role in quantum technology, which he described as a potential game-changer for the IT sector and the broader economy. He said the Quantum Valley initiative launched in Andhra Pradesh would drive the next phase of the country’s IT evolution and help India emerge as a hardware-and-manufacturing hub alongside its strengths in software and services.
“Technology is mature now. AI is a reality. Real-time data collection is a reality. The next level is quantum computing as it has unlimited capabilities. As of today, this is the fastest, the father of all technologies or, you can say, the mother of all technologies,” he said.
Naidu noted that only a handful of countries have taken the lead in quantum technology and said India is among them. He referred to the national quantum mission announced by the central government and said Andhra Pradesh is now setting up Quantum Valley to support manufacturing readiness. “With that, our people are ready to produce quantum computers and get into manufacturing now,” he said.
Addressing concerns that many MoUs and investment announcements fail to translate into execution, Naidu said his government is focused on improving conversion rates and filtering out non-serious investors. “Earlier, I used to say ease of doing business. Now, I am going for speed of doing business,” he said, adding that investors expect timely returns for projects to remain viable.
He said escrow accounts are being introduced to ensure transparency in subsidies and incentives. “I have committed something for you, year by year. I will give you online with an escrow account. You do not come to me,” he said, stressing the need for self-discipline and regulation.
Investment proposals must include clear timelines and feasibility proof, with monthly reviews, he said. “All clearances we are giving in 21 days, or even less… For some of the projects, 10 days, one week, including even land acquisition,” he said, adding that farmer consultations ensure win-win outcomes.
Naidu said wealth creation through technology enables welfare delivery and highlighted Andhra Pradesh’s talent base. “Andhra is leading in technology. Of every 4 people in the field, all over the world, 1 is Indian… Among Indians, the Telugu community accounts for 35%,” he said.
On concerns around US H1B visas, he said returning talent presents an opportunity to build “great things” at home, calling brain drain a form of brain gain. On AI-led job disruption, he urged adaptation. “Any new technology, you cannot stop it… There may be fewer physical jobs in the future but mental jobs will always be there,” he said, recalling early skepticism around mobile phones.
