Odyssey Launches AI That Turns Videos Into Playable Worlds, Backed by Pixar Co-Founder

Odyssey, a startup established by self-driving experts Oliver Cameron and Jeff Hawke, has introduced an AI model that enables users to engage with streaming video in real time.

The technology produces video frames every 40 milliseconds, allowing users to navigate through scenes like in a 3D video game rather than just watching passively. An online demo is currently available, although it remains in its early development phase.

The system is based on a novel type of ‘world model’ that forecasts future visual states based on prior actions and environments. Odyssey asserts that its model can uphold spatial consistency, learn motion from video, and deliver coherent video output for five minutes or longer.

In contrast to models trained exclusively on internet data, Odyssey captures real-world settings using a specialized 360-degree, backpack-mounted camera to create higher-fidelity simulations.

Tech giants and AI startups are investigating world models to drive next-generation simulations and interactive media. However, creative professionals are still cautious. A 2024 study commissioned by the Animation Guild forecasted considerable job disruptions in film and animation.

Game studios like Activision Blizzard have faced scrutiny for employing AI while reducing their workforce.

Odyssey, on the other hand, maintains that its aim is collaboration rather than replacement. The company is also working on software that allows creators to edit scenes using tools such as Unreal Engine and Blender.

With $27 million in funding and support from Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull, Odyssey seeks to revolutionize video content across entertainment, education, and advertising through on-demand interactivity.
