Microsoft has announced the Copilot Fall release with new features aimed at making its AI assistant Copilot feel more personal and less mechanical. The company says the focus is on user control and productivity rather than hype or fear around AI.
The update brings improvements that make Copilot more adaptable, conversational, and emotionally responsive. A major addition is a visual avatar named Mico, created from the initials of Microsoft and Copilot.
Mico is a new animated character that appears when users interact with Copilot in voice mode. Short for Microsoft Copilot, Mico responds to users through facial expressions and colour changes that create a natural two way conversation. When a user expresses something happy, Mico brightens its appearance. If the tone becomes sad, it responds with empathy. Microsoft calls it expressive and supportive, while also able to push back respectfully when needed.
Jacob Andreou, Microsoft’s VP of product and growth, said in an interview with a common publication that Mico has been under testing for several months. “You can see it, it reacts as you speak to it, and if you talk about something sad, you will see its facial expressions react almost immediately,” he said. Mico appears by default in Copilot voice mode, but users can disable it for a simpler interface if they prefer.
Microsoft has also released a video that shows Mico with various colours and expressions. The avatar shifts between warm and cool tones. It glows brighter when actively listening and softens its light when conversations become serious or reflective. The company says this adds visual depth and turns Copilot into a more dynamic AI companion for a human like experience.
For now, Mico is available only in the United States. Microsoft has also added a memory feature that lets Copilot remember details from earlier conversations. This helps maintain context and supports continuity for users. The company plans to expand Mico and the memory feature to more regions as part of the broader Copilot ecosystem rollout.
With Mico, Microsoft is taking a major step to make AI interactions more empathetic, more engaging, and more immersive. Copilot is evolving into a conversational assistant that feels less like software and more like a companion.
