Medical Insurance Scam in Mumbai: Retired Doctor and Daughter Lose ₹11.93 Lakh

In a recent incident of cyber fraud disguised as a medical insurance offer, a retired doctor and his daughter from Mumbai were scammed out of Rs 11.93 lakh.

The victims, 90-year-old Dr. C. Kaul and his 65-year-old daughter R. Kaul, a retired professor from Sweden, was misled into transferring money under the pretense of securing medical insurance.

On March 19, R. Kaul received a scam call from someone claiming to be Kuldeep Shriwastak, an official from ONGC in Bandra East, who told her that her father’s medical insurance had not been approved. When she inquired about the next steps, the caller instructed her to download a ‘customer support’ app, promising that her father would receive Rs 10 lakh in medical coverage.

Trusting the scammer, R. Kaul complied, but after installing the app, she was asked to pay Rs 1.93 lakh as a refundable processing fee.

Two days later, Dr. Kaul found that Rs 10 lakh had been debited from his account without his consent. This case underscores the rising trend of cyber fraud in Mumbai and the critical need for greater digital awareness, particularly among the elderly.

Previously, Medical Dialogues reported on another retired doctor in Mumbai who lost nearly Rs. 9.77 lakh in scam due to unauthorized transactions from his NRE account, without ever sharing his OTP or banking details.
