A major clean up drive by Indian Railways has led to a sharp fall in new user registrations on the IRCTC ticketing platform.
Officials said that after the introduction of a stricter identity verification system, daily new user IDs on the IRCTC website have come down to around 5,000 from nearly 1,00,000 earlier. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that the crackdown on ticket bookings made through fake identities is showing clear results.
“Following the introduction of a stringent system to establish user identity and detect fake IDs, about 5,000 new user IDs are now being added daily on the IRCTC website,” the press note said. Before these reforms, the number of new accounts had reached almost 1,00,000 per day.
Officials said the action has already led to the deactivation of 3.03 crore fake IRCTC accounts. In addition, another 2.7 crore user IDs have either been temporarily suspended or identified for suspension due to suspicious activity.
“Another 2.7 crore user IDs have either been temporarily suspended or identified for suspension based on the suspicious activities they are indulging in,” officials stated.
The Railway Minister has directed officials to further reform the IRCTC ticketing system so that genuine passengers can easily book tickets using real and verified user IDs. The focus is to ensure fair access to tickets for all travellers.
Separately, Ashwini Vaishnaw has also instructed officials to introduce local cuisine on Vande Bharat trains. Officials said offering food that reflects regional culture and tastes will improve the overall passenger experience. This initiative will be expanded to more trains in a phased manner.
