India is exploring talks with the US to ease the Biden-era cap on GPU imports, crucial for AI and data centre expansion

India is considering new negotiations with the US to lift the Joe Biden-era restriction on importation of GPUs (Graphics Processing Units), media have been informed by insiders.

Following US Vice President JD Vance’s visit to India, which is said to have created fresh diplomatic avenues for reducing technology-related limitations, the action was taken.

Shortly before then-President Joe Biden stepped down in January 2025, the United States placed a 50,000 GPU yearly restriction on India.

The construction of data centers and the powering of artificial intelligence (AI) models are both critical components of India’s ambitious AI ambition.

The nation’s attempts to expand its AI infrastructure were viewed as being hampered by this limitation.

The Indian government wants to make more than 33,000 GPUs available under the AI Mission.

Originally, empanelled firms were to source 18,693 GPUs, of which 14,000 were made available in Round 1. Among the companies chosen in this round were Jio Platforms and Tata Communications.

According to reports, the government is expected to receive bids for the provision of an additional 15,000 GPUs based on how firms responded to Round 2.

Concurrently, India is anticipated to choose the initial group of candidates to create native Large Language Models (LLMs) and Small Language Models (SLMs), which is a crucial stage in creating autonomous AI capabilities. By the end of April, this is also anticipated to be completed.
