Strengthening public awareness is becoming a key strategy in tackling rising online fraud. V. C. Sajjanar, Commissioner of Hyderabad Police, has called on citizens to actively participate in spreading awareness about cybercrimes to help prevent people from falling victim to digital scams.
The appeal was made during an orientation programme for ‘Cyber Simba’ volunteers held at the TGICCC auditorium in Banjara Hills in Hyderabad. The session was organised as part of the ‘Cyber Simba’ initiative under the ‘Jagrut Hyderabad Surakshit Hyderabad’ campaign, which focuses on improving cyber safety across communities.
Officials said the volunteer programme encourages participants to educate people in their local areas about common cyber frauds and ways to avoid them. According to the Commissioner, public participation plays a critical role in preventing cybercrime and protecting citizens from fraudulent schemes operated by cybercriminals.
Since the programme was launched in Nov last year, 1,717 volunteers have registered to participate in the initiative. Authorities said volunteers have conducted 5,118 door-to-door outreach activities, reaching around 2,00,000 people with cyber safety awareness.
Sajjanar also urged citizens to make better use of social media and messaging platforms by sharing cyber safety information instead of limiting them to routine greetings. He said such platforms can play a major role in spreading awareness quickly among communities.
The Commissioner highlighted the importance of reporting cybercrime immediately after it occurs. He described the first hour after a cybercrime as the “golden hour” and advised victims to contact the 1930 helpline as soon as possible to improve the chances of recovering lost money.
He also mentioned the introduction of the ‘C Mitra’ service, which allows victims to file cybercrime complaints from home without visiting a police station.
Officials said increased awareness efforts have already started showing results. The number of daily cybercrime complaints has reduced from around 80 to 60.
Authorities believe continued public involvement and awareness campaigns will play a key role in preventing cyber fraud and strengthening digital safety in the city.
