Himachal Pradesh Cyber Fraud Scandal: Rs 114 Crore Duped from 12,000 Victims, Rs 15 Crore Recovered

Himachal Pradesh: The Cyber Crime Cell of Himachal Pradesh has documented around 12,000 instances of online fraud, resulting in losses of an astonishing Rs 114 crore for victims. The agency has managed to recover Rs 15 crore for those affected. In recognition of its outstanding work, the Cyber Crime Cell of Himachal Pradesh received the esteemed Skoch Award 2024.

The CY Station Data Centre, part of the Himachal Pradesh Cyber Crime Cell, plays a crucial role in tackling cyber fraud. Operating around the clock, it handled 110,794 calls related to cybercrime in 2024, with 19% of these calls coming from women and 2% from children. The Customer Service Support Centre (CSSC) team achieved a 100% response rate, ensuring that all complaints were swiftly uploaded to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) for prompt action.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Cyber Crime, Mohit Chawla, emphasized the centre’s effective collaboration with banks and real-time integration with the NCRP portal, which facilitated the recovery of Rs 15 crore from the total Rs 114 crore lost by victims. The centre, which employs 21 staff members, including 9 women, has been recognized as a “game changer” in the fight against cybercrime.

The CY Station Data Centre operates through eight specialized divisions, such as the Bank Coordination Centre (BCC) and the Cyber Training & Research Centre (CTRC), which offer technical assistance and training to counter cyber threats. Its initiatives have garnered the Skoch Award, one of India’s most prestigious civilian accolades, acknowledging its role in promoting socio-economic change through cybercrime prevention.

Director General of Police (DGP), State CID Himachal Pradesh, SR Ojha, commended the CY Station team for their accomplishments and urged them to persist in their essential mission of protecting citizens from cyber fraud.
