Cybercriminals reportedly used a malicious APK file to target a government employee and defraud him of about Rs 4 lakh in a bank scam.
After installing a malicious APK file given by a scammer acting as a relationship manager from a private bank, the 59-year-old complainant lost over Rs 3.92 lakh.
Based on the information that is currently available, the caller asked personal information and stated that the victim’s address was incorrect. The victim’s account was illegally charged with the amount after the APK was enabled.
Authorities in charge of cybercrime have warned people not to install strange applications or divulge personal information in texts. “Banks never send APK files or request KYC updates through third-party links,” officials warned.
Victims should phone 1930 or report cybercrime at cybercrime.gov.in. In case of an emergency, call 8712665171.
