Google has introduced Gemma 3, the latest version in its series of lightweight open models, which are powered by the Gemini 2.0 framework. In a blog post announcing the release, Google stated that Gemma 3 comes in various sizes: 1B, 4B, 12B, and 27B.
The tech company claimed these models are their “most advanced, portable and responsibly developed open models yet.”
Similar to its predecessors, the Gemma 3 models are designed to operate directly on smartphones, laptops, and other devices, assisting developers in building AI applications. These models support over 35 languages and can analyze text, images, and short videos, although they only provide text-based responses.
According to the company, Gemma 3 surpasses Meta’s Llama-4-5B model and OpenAI’s o3-mini and DeepSeek-V3 across multiple benchmarks while functioning on a single GPU. Additionally, Gemma 3 features a 128k-token context window, allowing it to handle substantial amounts of data.
Moreover, Google has launched the Shield Gemma 2 image safety classifier, which filters out sexually explicit, dangerous, and violent images. The models are available for download on platforms such as Kaggle, Hugging Face, and Google Studio.
