Google announces new anti-scam tools and security upgrades

A senior official from the IT Ministry has said that the implementation of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act will rely on privacy enhancing technologies such as federated learning, homomorphic encryption, and differential privacy. Vikash Chourasia, Scientist D from the Cyber Laws and Data Governance Group, explained that India has completed the stage of building the law and must now focus on effective execution. He said, “Now we have to drive the car. That is where we feel that PETs are the core agents for us to deliver the implementation of the DPDP. And that is where we look forward to partnering with institutions and academic groups.”

He also said that a meeting with stakeholders including the Centre for Responsible AI at IIT Madras is planned soon. Chourasia spoke during a panel that included senior officials and industry leaders at a forum hosted by Google India in New Delhi on 20 November.

The event was part of Google’s AI pre summit forum, organised by the Google Safety Engineering team. It is one of eight hundred events being held ahead of the India AI Impact Summit that will take place in February 2026. This summit will be the first major AI summit hosted in the global South after earlier editions in Bletchley Park, Seoul, and Paris.

During the event, Google presented new tools and partnerships aimed at improving digital safety for Indian users. It announced upgrades to its cybersecurity products and expanded its partnerships with organisations such as the Centre for Responsible AI and the CyberPeace Foundation.

To fight online scams, Google India said it is introducing a scam detection feature on Pixel phones. This feature uses Gemini Nano to analyse calls in real time and alerts users about possible scams. All processing happens on the device without recording audio or sending data to Google. The feature is off by default, works only on calls from unknown numbers, plays a beep to alert participants, and can be switched off at any time.

Google also said it is testing a feature to counter rising digital arrest scams. Users on Android 11 and above will see a clear warning when they attempt to share their screen with an unknown contact and can end the call instantly. This has been developed with financial partners such as Google Play, Navi, and Paytm.

The company also introduced Enhanced Phone Number Verification, an Android based security protocol that replaces SMS based OTPs with a secure SIM based check.

Google added that Google Pay shows more than one million scam related warnings every week. Google Play Protect has also blocked more than one hundred and fifteen million attempts to install sideloaded apps that misuse sensitive permissions often linked to financial fraud in India.
