Google Launches ‘Safety Charter’ to Combat Online Fraud and Promote Responsible AI in India

Google revealed a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the safety of India’s digital environment by launching its new ‘Safety Charter’ during the ‘Safer with Google India Summit’.

This initiative aims to safeguard users from online fraud, enhance cybersecurity for essential infrastructure, and ensure responsible AI development.

The Safety Charter is centered around three primary objectives: protecting internet users from scams and fraud, fortifying cybersecurity for both governments and businesses, and creating responsible AI systems that prioritize user safety.

A crucial component of this initiative is Google’s ‘Digikavach’ program, which has already reached over 17.7 crore Indians through AI-driven tools and awareness campaigns targeting financial scams.

With the integration of AI, Google’s systems are becoming increasingly effective—its Search feature now detects 20 times more scam websites, while scam incidents on customer service and government platforms have decreased by 80 percent and 70 percent, respectively.

In terms of messaging, Google Messages is successfully blocking over 500 million scam texts each month.

Google Pay, a popular service in India, has issued more than 4.1 crore alerts to inform users about potential frauds, helping to avert fraud amounting to Rs 13,000 crore in 2024 alone.

The company’s app safety mechanism, Google Play Protect, has prevented nearly 6 crore risky app installations across 1.3 crore devices since its launch in India in October 2024.

Gmail, utilized by billions worldwide, is automatically blocking over 99.9 percent of spam, phishing attempts, and malware.
