Google introduces ‘preferred sources’ feature to personalise news experience

Google has introduced a new “preferred sources” feature that allows users to select their favourite news outlets, ensuring that articles from these sources appear more prominently in the Top Stories section of Google News. The feature, launched on August 12, is designed to give readers greater control over their news experience by enabling them to customise the content they see.

With this update, users can curate their news feed by choosing trusted sources that matter most to them. For instance, when someone searches for a topic like “dark energy” on Google News, the results will include the latest articles from their chosen sources, along with coverage from other publications.

According to a post on Google’s official blog, “Upon selecting your preferred sources, you will see a greater number of their articles prominently featured in Top Stories whenever fresh and pertinent content is published.” This enhancement ensures that users receive timely updates from the outlets they value most.

The new feature can be applied to any news website, giving users a more personalised and consistent reading experience. It reflects Google’s ongoing effort to make news discovery more user-focused and relevant.

To add a publication to the preferred sources list, users can follow a few simple steps:

  1. While browsing a topic on Google News, click the icon next to “Top Stories.”

  2. In the “preferred sources” search box, type the name of the desired publication.

  3. Select the checkbox next to the publication’s name and logo.

  4. Refresh the search results to start seeing more updates from that source.

Google explained that once users add their preferred outlets, those publications will “feature more prominently in Top Stories or within a dedicated ‘From your sources’ section on the results page.” This addition helps readers stay updated with the latest stories from the platforms they trust, while still discovering trending content from across the web.

The “preferred sources” feature marks another step in Google’s push to make news more personalised, accessible, and aligned with individual user preferences.
