Emerging tech and manufacturing hubs are driving India’s new wave of innovation

India’s smaller cities are fast becoming major contributors to the country’s technology and manufacturing growth story. The Mangaluru-Manipal-Udupi region has witnessed three significant acquisitions in the past four years, reflecting the increasing global interest in companies from these towns.

App development company Robosoft, founded by Rohith Bhat, was acquired by Japan’s TechnoPro Holdings for Rs 805 crore. Google Cloud specialist Niveus Solutions, founded by Suyog Shetty, Rashmi George, Roshan Bava, and Mohsin Khan, was taken over by Japan’s NTT Data. Automation services firm Novigo Solutions, founded by Mohammed Hanif, Praveen Kumar Kalbhavi, Mohammed Jarood, and Shihab Kalandar, was acquired by Blackstone-backed R Systems International for more than Rs 400 crore.

The region is also witnessing growing interest from global capability centres. Renowned audio brand Bose Professional has selected Mangaluru for its first dedicated research and development centre outside its headquarters to design the next generation of Bose products. Denmark’s enterprise software and cloud services firm EG launched its global capability centre, EGDK, in Mangaluru in 2019 with fewer than 20 employees and has since expanded to a team of 850.

Industry leaders such as Mohandas Pai, Chairman of 3one4 Capital and former Infosys Board Member and CFO; Namith Padmaraj, Director of Software Engineering at Bose Professional; Anand Fernandes, CEO of EGDK India; Ranjitha Prabhu, Co-founder and Delivery Head of CodeZyng and CEO and Founder of Zupaloop; and Gurudatta Shenoy, Managing Partner of Mukund MGM Realty, believe the region’s strong educational institutions and better work-life balance make it an ideal alternative to crowded metropolitan cities.

In the manufacturing sector, factories in the Delhi-NCR region are increasingly using tech automation and AI to enhance global competitiveness. Vinod Sharma, Chairman of CII’s National Committee on Electronics Manufacturing and Managing Director of Deki Electronics, said that as manufacturing scales up to millions of components daily, AI becomes essential for maintaining efficiency and competitiveness.

Akhil George reports on Venkatesh Mudragalla and Vishal Sanghavi’s Jeh Aerospace, which manufactures precision aero-engine components in Hyderabad. The company exports entirely to the US and Europe, producing hard alloy parts cut to microns using advanced 3- and 5-axis machines under strict certifications. “From 2D blueprints we build 3D, program, and run a fully digital, paperless, Industry 4.0 shop,” said Venkatesh.
