Virgin Australia has officially named Dave Emerson as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), following the announcement by Jayne Hrdlicka in February 2024 that she would step down after leading the airline for several years. The appointment marks a significant leadership change at Virgin Australia, which is also in the process of relisting on the local stock exchange.
Emerson, who has served as the airline’s Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) since 2021, will replace Hrdlicka at the top. His transition into the CEO role comes after a challenging period for Virgin Australia, which included its acquisition by Bain Capital in 2020. The new leadership change also follows scrutiny from Australia’s Employment Minister, Murray Watt, urging careful evaluation of the new CEO’s industrial relations history.
Previously, Paul Jones, Virgin Australia’s Chief Customer Officer, was considered a leading contender for the position. Emerson, however, emerged as the chosen candidate to continue the airline’s transformation journey. Before joining Virgin Australia, Emerson was a senior partner at Bain & Company and relocated from Dallas, Texas, to Brisbane to take on the CCO role.
In his first statement as the new CEO, Dave Emerson expressed, “I will continue the transformation journey begun under Jayne’s outstanding leadership.” He added, “The strategy we set as we emerged from administration several years ago is now paying off.”
Jayne Hrdlicka has also shared her thoughts on the appointment, saying, “It is now the perfect time to transition leadership for this next chapter. Dave is an excellent choice to succeed me as CEO.” She further noted that Virgin Australia’s management has “detailed plans in place for the next four years,” ensuring a strong future for the airline.
Hrdlicka will remain with the company for a few months to assist with the leadership transition and ensure a smooth handover to Emerson.
