A new form of online scam is on the rise, with cyber fraudsters now impersonating officials from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to trick innocent investors. The Cyber Crime Branch of the Rajasthan Police has issued a strong public warning, urging people to stay vigilant against these deceitful tactics.
According to authorities, these scammers are using fake SEBI letterheads, counterfeit recovery certificates, and forged seals to make their fraudulent documents appear legitimate. Superintendent of Police (Cyber Crime) Shantanu Kumar explained that these documents closely resemble real SEBI communications and are being used to pose as SEBI officers in order to extort money from victims under false pretences.
“These fake letters and certificates appear genuine at first glance and are used to deceive investors by posing as SEBI officers,” Kumar said. The main objective, he added, is to mislead people and illegally collect funds by exploiting their trust.
SEBI has advised the public to always verify the authenticity of any documents or communication received. People can confirm genuine SEBI orders on the official website, validate recovery certificates, authenticate documents through the Unique Document Identification Number (UDIN), and confirm the identities of SEBI officials. It’s also important to ensure that emails come from official SEBI domains.
The Rajasthan Police has urged anyone who comes across such scams to act immediately. Victims or concerned individuals should contact the Cybercrime Helpline by dialling 1930, file a complaint online, and report the incident at the nearest police station or dedicated cyber police unit.
Authorities have stressed that spreading awareness is the most effective shield against such online frauds. Investors are strongly advised to never act on any document or communication without proper verification through official channels.
Stay cautious, stay informed, and report anything suspicious. The fight against cybercrime begins with each of us.
