In a heart-wrenching case of digital deceit, a 67-year-old woman became the latest victim of cyber fraud, losing ₹4.47 lakh to a scammer who pretended to be a bank official. The incident unfolded on May 3, but the complaint reached the Chatuhshrungi police station on May 14.
As narrated in her FIR, the senior citizen received a phone call from a man claiming to be the manager of her nationalised bank. With an air of false authority, he assured her assistance with her debit card PIN and persuaded her to click on a link sent to her mobile phone.
Unaware of the sinister trap, she followed his instructions. Moments later, she realised that her internet banking credentials had been compromised. The cyber fraudster, having gained control, drained ₹4.47 lakh from her account. The deceptive calm of the call had masked a calculated act of cyber theft.
This case stands as yet another cautionary tale of how digital con artists exploit trust, especially among vulnerable senior citizens. Authorities urge the public never to share banking details or click on suspicious links received via calls, messages or emails, no matter how convincing the sender may appear.
Cyber police are actively investigating the case and tracing the digital footprints left behind by the imposter. The incident highlights the pressing need for greater awareness about online safety and the importance of reporting such frauds promptly.
As cyber criminals continue to use sophisticated methods cloaked in everyday interactions, it becomes ever more vital to stay vigilant and protect one’s digital presence.
