ChatGPT rolls out tone customisation features to give users more control over conversations

OpenAI has introduced new personalization controls in ChatGPT that allow users to decide how the chatbot sounds during conversations. Instead of relying on one fixed style, users can now adjust the bot’s tone to better match their needs at work or in daily use. The update is aimed at making interactions feel more natural and comfortable for different kinds of users.

The new features are available in the Personalization settings inside ChatGPT. Users can set sliders for warmth and enthusiasm as “More,” “Less,” or “Default.” Once selected, these preferences apply across all chats, removing the need to repeatedly prompt the bot to respond in a certain way. This marks a shift from earlier preset styles like “Professional” or “Creative,” as people can now fine tune individual traits instead of choosing a single persona.

The change follows months of mixed feedback about ChatGPT’s conversational style. Earlier in 2025, an update made the bot sound overly agreeable and flattering, which led to criticism and a rollback. Later versions were then described by users as feeling “cold” or “robotic.” By adding direct controls, OpenAI is responding to these concerns and trying to balance consistency with flexibility as the technology reaches more users.

Beyond warmth and enthusiasm, the settings also let users control emoji usage and how structured responses should be, such as the use of headers or bullet points. OpenAI says these options do not affect how the system works behind the scenes and that the chatbot will “remember” preferences across sessions. Experts believe this could help ChatGPT fit into more workflows, from users who want short and direct answers to creators who prefer expressive responses. As tone becomes more important in everyday AI use, this update shows a growing focus on designing tools around people and their preferences.
