India’s competition watchdog is stepping up its focus on emerging risks in the artificial intelligence space. Ravneet Kaur, Chairperson of the Competition Commission of India, said the regulator is preparing to act against potential anti-competitive practices in AI.
“… we are getting ready to take action even on any anti-competitive practices which might emerge in the AI front.
“So, we’ve identified potential anti-competitive conduct… which would be concentration in the AI value chain. It could be algorithmic collusion, targeted price discrimination, self-preferencing, or any opaqueness in the AI,” Kaur said.
She added that the regulator is also examining anti-trust concerns across sectors such as sports, civil aviation, paints and varnishes, and liquor. The Commission continues to monitor unfair business practices in the marketplace closely.
Last year, the CCI released a market study focused on AI and competition, highlighting emerging challenges in the evolving technology landscape. Speaking at the 11th National Conference on Economics of Competition Law in the national capital, Kaur shared updates on the regulator’s case handling.
“We get antitrust matters from all across. We have a total of 1,360 anti-trust information which has been received by the Commission, and out of that, 1,211 (matters) have already been decided and disposed of,” she said.
At the same event, Rajiv Gauba, Member of NITI Aayog, stressed that a strong competition framework is key to attracting foreign investments. He highlighted the importance of avoiding excessive regulation and maintaining a balanced approach to competition law.
