A major public-private partnership in the US telecom sector is set for expansion, as AT&T commits to a $2 billion deal to enhance the country’s emergency communication network.
The agreement includes an investment of approximately $1 billion to upgrade FirstNet, along with an additional $1 billion in cost savings through reduced service rates, according to a statement from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
FirstNet, the federal emergency cellular network, was originally awarded to AT&T under a 25-year contract in 2017. The initiative was developed following recommendations by a federal commission in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks to create a unified communication system for emergency services.
The network enables first responders—including medical personnel, firefighters, and police officers—to share critical information on a single, reliable platform. It is currently used by over 31,000 agencies across the United States.
The latest agreement follows an executive order issued in early 2025 by U.S. President Donald Trump, which directed federal agencies to review existing contracts and improve efficiency.
Commenting on the development, AT&T President of Public Sector Wes Anderson said, “This agreement-in-principle… reflects AT&T’s ongoing dedication to our public-private partnership.”
The move is expected to strengthen the reliability and cost-efficiency of emergency communications infrastructure across the country.
