Apple is reportedly preparing major display upgrades for its upcoming iPhone 18 series, following the launch of the iPhone 17 line-up. While the Pro models often grab attention, it was the standard iPhone 17 that stood out this year thanks to its significant improvements. The next generation is set to take things further with advanced LTPO plus display panels and the possible addition of under-display infrared sensors for Face ID.
According to sources, Apple will rely on Samsung Display and LG Display for the iPhone 18 series screens. While BOE Display contributed to the iPhone 17 supply chain, quality issues may prevent the company from participating in the upcoming lineup. LTPO plus technology is expected to use oxide TFTs for switching and driving transistors, which could result in more uniform brightness, faster response times and better energy efficiency compared to current panels.
The report also highlights the potential inclusion of under-display infrared sensors, enabling Face ID authentication beneath the screen. If implemented, this could allow Apple to remove the pill-shaped notch known as the Dynamic Island, leaving only a small hole-punch for the front camera. This would give the iPhone 18 series a cleaner and more seamless display design, keeping the biometric security feature fully functional while improving aesthetics.
In addition to the iPhone 18 series, Apple is said to be preparing its first foldable iPhone, widely called the iPhone Fold, expected in 2026. Samsung Display is reportedly the exclusive supplier for this foldable screen. The device is designed to unfold along a vertical axis without wrinkles, potentially setting a new standard for foldable smartphones.
